So, a upcoming startup from PAF-KIET by an under graduate student Kamran Usman who recently won 2nd Prize in software competition at SZABIST, Karachi. iEvaluate is a smart tool for small to medium sized businesses (and it can be used by large organizations) that wish to evaluate various aspects of their business such as employee’s performance, their feedback about the organization, and various other activities. Such activities help businesses make better decisions and introduce better policies based on statistical data received from the evaluation procedure.
iEvaluate is built as a web based application (that means it’s accessible from anywhere in the world) that incorporates a clean and usable interface for performing different tasks such as:
- Performance evaluation of each of the employees of the organization at individual or group level - Graphical reports based on different criteria - Ability of delegation of tasks to manage large number of users - An swift administration area to perform system-wide changes - Advanced Reporting Schemes - Ability to extend and tailor to individual business needs - And more…
To understand the tool better, let’s consider a scenario: Suppose that you are a CEO of an organization and you have 50 people working for you. Now, after performing the evaluation of the people who are working for you, you generate a report that tells you that 90% of the people who work for you have a hard time reaching the workplace. The reason for that is the office is located in Korangi Industrial Area. So in order to retain your employees, you would be able to make a decision based on that report, and introduce free transport service for all the employees of your organization. This results in happy employees, which in turn results in more committment to work, which in turn results in a healthy growth and a security for the business.
Another scenario may be based upon your top talent. Let’s imagine that your top 10 people of the organization are having difficulty in financing their kids’ education. In today’s competitive environment, one of your top talents may just slip away and find a job at another company - a big loss for you. So how would you actually know that they are having difficulty in this particular phase of life? how would you retain that talent? Simple, use the evaluation procedures in iEvaluate and get to know on record that they are worried about their kids’ educational expenses. As a result, based on the reports, you can introduce a policy of supporting the top talent and paying half of their kids’ educational expenses. The end result: your top talent is retained and they’re happy! This means better business for you!
iEvaluate is a simple and easy to use tool, which can be used in various other situations, and events. It is just about evaluation and management of any of the assets you may have in order to bring to front the issues and resolve them to deliver superior quality and do good business!
Optical Character Recognition is a unique approach developed for recognizing isolated character that requires less complex calculations but still giving adequate results. In case of document image recognition, an additional step of detecting lines of text and possible set of character among those lines is a requisite. There are numerous methods available for character recognition. From numerical and statistical approach to AI based approach in an increasing order of their recognition accuracy, respectively. None of the approaches stated has recognition accuracy of 100%.Even the humans are not credited with absolute recognition accuracy. The main objective of the recognition software is to help its user in more physically tiring and cumbersome work of actually typing the whole document especially for a user. The error correction still resides with its user only. Hence, a recognition accuracy of even about 90% gives very satisfactory results. Apart from all this, the image quality also plays a very important role in the recognition accuracy.

It all started on a rainy day back in 2006 when I reached Marriot Hotel with a USB in my pocket to give a presentation on ‘iEducationXP’ – my Final Year Project. Yes! I was competing for “Student Tertiary Category” at P@SHA ICT Awards 2006. I was one of those students whose project got selected for the final round presentation. After the demo, I came to know that I was the only FASTian (Karachi) competing in the final rounds, a small little achievement for me. As far as I remember, I was judged by Mr. Jawad Farid (CEO, Alchemya) and Yusuf Jan (CEO, MIXIT Technologies) their comments/suggestions really helped me a lot at that time. I still remember all those server hosting questions regarding hosting of large amount of video :), student-teacher interaction etc etc. On the same day, I met Madam Jehan Ara for the very first time. Still remember she guiding me to the place where I should wait for my turn :). Though I was unable to make it to the top 2 but still the experience was enough to get me started.
In 2007, my employer (Kalsoft Pvt Ltd) won Merit award in “E-Government & E-Community Applications” category for the application “Electoral Roll System for Election Commission of Pakistan”. At that time I was working as a Software Engineer for them and saw this application build and tested right in front of me. Soon I resigned to start my own venture.
Here comes 2008! same place, same judge and We Won! an achievement for a 10 month old company. Never really tough that we will be up there on the stage that early. Best in Innovative Work Environment! Still unbelievable! According to the award description “This award will be presented to the company that has the most innovative work environment i.e. flexibility and diversity in the workforce, a work environment that is conducive to idea generation and innovation.” This is what Madam Jehan Ara said about us
“There was an Award for the Best in Innovative Work Environment. This was won by Nuvica - a young startup in Karachi. Nuvica is a company which has no member older than 25 years old. The entire team blog and, in addition to the work they do as part of the Nuvica team, they are encouraged to have their own individual projects. So while CEO Ali Raza Shaikh runs DevNext sessions at Universities, Ammar Yasir has set up Teabreak.pk and Fariha Akhtar runs IdeasHut.com.”
After 10 months of working at the current office with lots of ups and downs we are finally moving to much larger space (a full independent bungalow). All this is the part of Nuvica’s revamping plans as said in this post, where we are locating to a new place, hiring new employees and building a new corporate culture.
So, what this post is all about? If you interested in renting out our current location with the purchasing of some existing infrastructure then you can contact me at 0333-2392884 or you can email ali.raza.shaikh@gmail.com

Due to the success of our last event at Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, Karachi. We were invited again by their management to conduct that session again on a larger scale. So, the event started with a bang with more than 150+ people showed up. Session started with a simple question “How many of you want to start your own company?” with few people raising their hands and the session ended with the same question “Now, how many of you want to start your own company” with 75% people raising their hands including faculty members :). So, target achieved!
During the session I discussed many things like how to get started, how to manage finance, who to hire, what to develop, how to market etc etc. Who said that nothing is possible in Pakistan? See our youth, our universities. This is the place where talented people coming out from and I bet! you will see something from the students of Muhammad Ali Jinnah University pretty soon.

On Friday, 24 October 2008 we conducted our first user group session at Usman Institute to Technology, Karachi on “New Trends in Software Testing”. Usman Institute of Technology was established in 1994 through a benefaction of Usman Memorial Foundation as a private, not-for-profit Centre of Excellence in technology. Its aim is to prepare Engineers, Technologists and Scientists who have the character and skills that the country needs and who would be readily employable on graduation to serve Pakistan.
So, what was the basic motive behind this session? As most of you know that 99% of students think that there is no point continuing your career as a Software Tester, it’s a boring field and there is no future in it! My motive was to let them know about the +ve aspect of this field. I hope I was able to motivate some students to join companies as a full time tester because a tester is a person who controls the quality of a software. It’s a fact that developers hate testers and I think most of you are well aware why I am saying this :). If you are a good tester that means you can become a good developer as well. With the help of this session we are able to remove some confusion regarding manual vs. automated testing, unit tests, integration tests, load testing etc etc
This session was highly appreciated by the students as we are asked to conduct 3-4 more events at their campus in the coming month. In the end I would like to thank Mr. Parkash Lohana (Head of Computer Science Department) and Hassaan Tahir (Chairman, UITCS and Microsoft Student Ambassador) for inviting us.

So, we are back with our User Group Activities. Today! I was invited to have a session on “Be your own Boss” and “How blogging can help you to market your Product”. It was really a nice experience to have an interactive session with CS and BBA students as most of them wants to change the world. So, what’s the main point of this session? Students were there, ideas were there, talent was there but motivation was lacking. I just tried to get them motivated, success or failure is part of life. I myself faced pretty hard time in my life or I can say that I am facing hard time in my life. So, does it matter? Problems in your life will take over your dreams? No!
I will again go with the motto you see at the top of my blog “Whenever you want to do something and whenever you want to experiment something new, there would be hundred people telling you that you cannot do it. Make sure you only listen to yourself when you have plans and believe in your self.” Don’t let the hard realties of life bring you down; don’t think that you can’t do it. Nothing is impossible.
