Pakistan?s Civil Service Entry Exam Fails to fill Vacancies

Raza RumiIs it the case that finally the centuries old steelframe is getting irrelevant in the fast changing urban Pakistan. In a country of 170 million, there were not enough competent and interested candidates to fill up the vacancies for the competitive examination. If on one hand, this trend betrays the decline of institutions, on […]

‘Our Dreams Are Dead’

The walls stand 30 feet high, huge slabs of gray cement, snaking their way through the West Bank for almost 500 miles. They block roads, bisect villages, cut off kids from their schools, farmers from their fields, families from relatives. “Welcome to the Ghetto, Walls of Tears” reads one of the many graffiti. “The Dumb Wall Is Screaming,” “Make Love, Not Walls,” read others. And my favorite, in huge orange letters on the road to Ramallah: “Control*Alt*Delete.” Around Bethlehem the walls have become a protest art gallery—an oversize white donkey with tears running down its cheeks, a dove wearing a flak vest with a bull’s-eye painted on its breast, a young girl frisking a soldier. The Israelis call them separation walls. The Palestinians call them apartheid walls. They are a nightmare.

Consider the Israeli travel restrictions. No Palestinian living in the West Bank is allowed to enter Jerusalem without written permission from the Israeli government.

Despair is the word I hear most often from West Bank Palestinians, 58 percent of whom have fallen below the poverty line. “I can’t get work from the Israeli side because I am haram [forbidden], and the Palestinians can’t even afford to pay me bus fare,” says an architect reduced to working in a bookstore. The night offers particular terrors. Jad, who works late, recognizes the sounds of frequent Israeli raids, “explosions and hard beats on doors and screams,” she says. ‘Our Dreams Are Dead’

Satghara

An old sleepy and dusty village Satghara lies about 20 minutes drive away from Okara in the quiet backwaters of Punjab. The coins found at Satghara prove that the place was inhabited at the time of Kushan dynasty. On the Southern bank of River Ravi, it is a typical Pakistani village where farmers live like rustics in the face of urban attractions. Though in a state of total neglect it has never been out of limelight. Besides heritage conscious people from all over the world the village has been visited by many prominent Balcoh leaders. The reason they say is that its a ” tukia nwab chrakr ki,” the last resting place of great Baloch hero Mir Chakar Rind.

If one wants to absorb the sense of history Satghara is just the place. A monument of departed greatness the relic belongs to a celebrated hero who now rest helpless and neglected in this silent place for removed from the noisy haunts of men. In the periphery few van trees, may be as old as the relics, stand witness to the bygone era.

For Balochis the sixteenth century was a very eventful period. They fought series of wars amongst themselves. These tribal conflicts not only cussed large scale blood shed but also resulted in mass migrations to Punjab Sindh and Gujrat.

Mir Chakar Rind is considered one of the greatest Baloch heroes. He is the center of Balcohi love lore and war ballads. He lived in Sevi (modern time Sibbi) in the hills of Balochistan and became the head of Rind tribe after his father Shiahak. A natural leader and great warror, Mir Chakar Rind was a man with resolute determination. A class of Baloch even regards him as invested with saintly virtues and mystic powers. After the end of the thirty year war against Lasharies he migrated to Punjab between 1518 to 1519.

Why Chakare-e-Azam as he was known preferred to settle in central Punjab so far away from Sibi is not known. Once at Satghara, he constructed a new hamlet near and old village. He built a fortification wall around the village and watch towers in 15 squares Kilometeres area encircling the fort for early warning against impending dangers. It was from this place that he refused to help Sher Shah Suri. His forces under the able command of his son Mir Shahdad , joined Humayun when after a long exile the Mughal emperor recaptured Delhi and ousted Afghan Suries in 1556. The emperor as a reward conferred a vast Jagir including Satghara (also horses and slaves) upon him. He ruled this chieftaincy till he died in 1565. Farishta has written, ” Mir Chakar Rind was a holder of jagir and commanding hordes of warriours in 1940 in Punjab.”

It was the tomb and fort of Mir Chakar Rind or whatever is left of it that I had come to see at Sathghara. The fort is large. Actually the wall once encircled the entire village. The two gateways with flat bands and pointed arches still survive though badly damaged. The wooden doors have disappeared. With growth in population the village has grown and spilled out of encircling wall long ago. The cluster of brick houses inside the wall is an eyesore.

Constructed of narrow red bricks used in upright courses to ensure additional strength; the wall is about 25 feet high and at least three feet thick. Despite the solidity of construction no where does it retains the original shape and is in urgent need of repair. Some of its most salient portions exist between the tomb and the first gateway. As I walked along the wall I could see massive cracks running from top to bottom. Salinity is also creeping up the walls. Beside one of the door ways a sign board reads that the Archealogy Department protects at the site.

How seriolsy the warning sign has been taken by the villagers is quite evident. The red thin bricks of the centureies old protected monument are used in almost every house in the village. At places the villagers have utilized the fortification wall as part of their houses. Major portion of the wall and what would have been the living quarters of the family of Mir Chakar Rind have all lost. The courtyard of the tom has shrunk due to encroachments and presently it is being used as “shamlat deh” for keeping the animals.

The followers who had accompanied Mir Chakar Rind to Satghara built the tomb. Today there is no Baloch living in the village. The neglected tomb is dilapidated and the surviving history is falling fast into decay. Presently even the watchman has not been employed by the Archaeology Department to look after the site.

The main chamber of the once majestic and imposing tomb is octagonal in plan. The roof decorative work and plaster have vanished. Cracks have snaked in all direction on the walls. The reainy water gathers in the roofless main chamber and stays there till it is dried by the sun. the water is destroying the foundations of the crumbling edifice. There are seven rough mud graves inside the chamber. A small tablet distinguishes the central grave. It reade: Askari Aaramgah, Mir Chakar (khan) Rind, Satghara, Okara, Munjabib Young Baloch Welfare Society, Ravi Road Lahore. Even the name of the great hero on the tablet is not written correctly similarly the large plawue provided by the Archaeology Department is full of mistakes.

The tomb was desecrated and its roof demolished by Maharaja Ranjit Singh who on his way to Multan had stayed in Satghara about 180 years ago. It has never been repaired even since Governments Archaeology Departments (federal as well as provincial) visiting elite police, (there is a police station too in the village)district admintration or locals no body seems to be concerned about the state of this important monument.

The first impact that this monument leaves is an emotional one for it is a symbol of cultural identity a part of heritage. It also has architectural historic documentary spiritual and symbolic value. The remains of the monument have to be preserved and saved from total ruination a danger they are facing at present.

As I drove back of a single way metallic road, plied mainly by animal transports and milkmen on the motorbikes, I could not help thinking; can the plight of this priceless site be brought to the notice of echelons of power? Can some national or international agency be moved to act and save the place for coming generations.

Baithak Desi Apr 29: Ziauddin Sardar, Mark Engler, David Sedaris, Shake-Head, Headlines, RealNews

When one sinner repents, says the biblical adage, there is much joy in heaven. So the angels, along with the government, must be rejoicing at the launch of the Quilliam Foundation. The thinktank has been established by not one but two repentant sinners: Ed Husain and Maajid Nawaz, ex-members of the extremist Islamic cult Hizb ut-Tahrir.
On earth, however, I would suggest a greater degree of caution. In the here and now, it’s not the repentant sinners we should celebrate but “the 99 righteous persons who need no repentance”, those unmentioned Muslims who refused to be seduced by the dark side. I know I am going to upset many of my Muslim friends who are quite ecstatic about the foundation. After all, as its website declares, Quilliam “rejects foreign ideologies of Islamism and jihadism” and upholds “Islam as a pluralistic, diverse tradition that can heal the pathology of Islamist extremism”. What could be wrong with such a message? To lionise former extremists feeds anti-Muslim prejudice , Ziauddin Sardar, writer and broadcaster

This essay was drawn from FPIF analyst Mark Engler’s new book, How to Rule the World: The Coming Battle Over the Global Economy, published by Nation Books. The Democrats’ “Free Trade” Divide

When I was in fourth grade, my class took a field trip to the American Tobacco plant in nearby Durham, North Carolina. There we witnessed the making of cigarettes and were given free packs to take home to our parents. I tell people this and they ask me how old I am, thinking, I guess, that I went to the world’s first elementary school, one where we wrote on cave walls and hunted our lunch with clubs. Then I mention the smoking lounge at my high school. It was outdoors, but, still, you’d never find anything like that now, not even if the school was in a prison. Letting Go

Hasan Abdal

Comfortably tucked in green hills north of Islamabad, Hasan Abdal is situated right on the Grand trunk Road. The town’s claims to fame are Cadet College and temple of Panja Sahib. This small and clean historic town neat is sacred for Sikhs.

Hassan Abdal is famous for its cadet college and also serves as the gateway to some most stunning sites in Pakistan. It is from here that Karakoram Highways turns towards Northern Areas. It is a convenient halting point of Grand Trunk Road (G T Road) from where one can go to places like Abbotabad and Northern Areas, Peshawar, Taxila, Wah, Rawalpindi. Coins of the Greco-Bectrians kings discovered from the adjoining tract suggest that the area was inhabited in first century B.C. Accounts of Xuan Zang, a seventh century Chinese Buddhist traveler tells us that the place was also sacred to Buddhists. However, presently the town is associated with Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikh religion and Baba Wali Qandhari, a revered Muslim saint. It is not clear how the town got its name but a reference is usually made to the eighteenth century Afghan conqueror, Ahmed Shah Abdali. The town has been mentioned by Mughal Emperor Jehangir in his memoirs and was frequently visited by successive Mughal Kings, on their way to Kashmir.

One has to understand it; it was wonderful during Mughal period: Romantic, beautiful and quiet. One of the significant landmark of past in Hasan Abdal is a set of greatly spread red brick buildings immediately to the west of the Grand Trunk Road. These buildings belong to the Cadet College Hasan Abdal, Pakistan’s foremost premier boarding institution. Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan inaugurated the school in 1954. The main academic block overlooks the college with a cricket ground in the centre, called the Oval. Six residential wings surround the Oval and it is always a pleasing sight to see smart young boys in uniforms walking towards their academic block. The college has always been famous for its academic results with its students bagging most of the top positions in board examinations. While Aitchison College has for a long time catered to the political leadership of the country, the establishment has come from colleges like Cadet College Hasan Abdal and Lawrence College.

One of the interesting facts regarding these colleges is the strong sense of comradeship and fraternity that prevails among the students. The boys of the Cadet College Hasan Abdal use word Abdalian with pride and pleasure. The Cadet College is surrounded by Loqat orchards, lush green fields and a gushing stream where a day with fishing rod can really be fruitful. Mr. Catchpole, the first principal of the College is also buried here.

The other claim of the town to international fame is Sikh Gurdwara (temple) known as Panja Sahib having a rock with the hand print of their religious leader Baba Guru Nanak. Twice a year, Sikh pilgrims visit this Gurdwara from all over the world. The legend has it that in 1521 AD, while passing through then deserted area on a very hot day, Guru Nanak’s companion Bhai Mardana got very thirsty. The Guru suggested that he go to the Saint Baba Wali Qandhari who lived in a hut atop a nearby hill and ask for water. The Saint refused to give water from his well. Desperate with thirst, Mardana repeated his plea three times. Finally the saint reprimanded Mardana who returned to his guru and collapsed at his feet.

The Guru asked him to pick up a stone. The disciple did as he was told, and water flowed from under the stone, while the Saint’s well dried up. The Saint then pushed a large boulder from hilltop and sent it rolling towards the Guru and Mardana. But when the boulder reached them, the Guru stretched out his hand and stopped it with his palm.

During Sikh rule, Hari Sing Nalva got the edifice of temple made at the place. Later, the temple was extended and a sarai (inn) was added for accommodation. The temple is typical of the rather florid Sikh style with gilded domes and cupolas and stands in the middle of a large water tank. Built with grey sandstone, its exterior is spotted with protruding domed bay windows. The central fluted dome is encircled by several symmetrically placed big and small domed kiosks. The cemented water tank derives its supply from a fresh water spring that emerges from underneath a huge rock. Now this huge rock has that famous hand print on it for which the site is known as ‘Panja Sahib’. On the nearby hill, at an altitude of 714 meters, lies a meditation chamber of Saint Baba Wali Qandhari, popularly known as Baba Hasan Abdal. The saint stayed in Hasan Abdal from 1406-1416 AD but died and is buried in village Baba Wali near Qandhar (Afghanistan). The devotees and visitors climb over the steps leading to the hill, for offerings and to have a panoramic view of Hasan Abdal. Two other historical buildings of Mughal era (Muqbara Hakeeman and so-called tomb of Lala Rukh) are located just opposite the temple. Hasan Abdal is an interesting small town.

I have known Hasan Abdal during my stay in Abbotabad. It is a neat little town, as pretty as a picture postcard. The town has a character of its own. Environment is tranquil, pollution free and quiet. One finds countless attractions spread around the town. And you can see (and have) lines of shops selling mutton karahi made in desi ghee side by side Peshawar fame chappal kabab along the G T Road near buss stop. Move away from the traffic hustle of the G T Road and what strikes you first is the emptiness. There is nothing much there, just air of a blue that is so attenuated that it is almost white. You stand anywhere and breathe in the dry air, feel the sun upon your neck. You are in Hasan Abdal suburbs; a countryside that is on the main road but still relatively only a few people visit.

Bathing Suits

I have been a swimmer all my life; in River Jhelum that is. The historic river passes through the village I come from. I used to wear any thing as my bathing suit. When I shifted my residence from rural to urban area, I had to go to swimming pools for my daily swimming. That is when I practically needed to use Swim Trunks and got one for myself.

Apart for being used for swimming, swimwear (usually called as swimsuits, bathing suits or swimdresses) are a popular items used for tanning and more all over the world. They come in fancy and attractive designs and very fine material. Swimsuits are a very well sought after fashion items.

Swimsuitsforall.com – leading swimsuit retailers - offers a wide range of swimdresses from women, men and kids including plus size swimwear. Their collection has different sizes, colours and styles to choose from. Explore the site and see what they are offering and how. Their imagery is good and gives the feeler how one of those women’s tankinis will look when being used. What is more, Swimsuitsforall.com also offer discount coupons (you can subscribe to their new offers). The site is neatly laid out and users’ friendly. Shopping also is easy there. Some of their Swim Trunks are already on my wish list.

Or else what?

160 million, plus or minus a few millions will have no significant change in their lifestyle after this perceived deadline will come to pass. The nation would still suffer the shenanigans of the newly elected faces. Electricity shortages, rising prices for petrol, lentils, rice, flour, lawlessness, traffic jams, ostentatious displays of power will still be the norm.

Poor will still look for a final (but haraam) solution to their woes.

The judges’ issue is hijacking the parliament and the new faces there…

[Ask-Me-Anything Series] Stupid Questions

Dear Readers, Ask-Me-Anything series was started with a vision to hold a serious discussion with my readers but it was rather transformed into a Tafreeh kind of thing. I know I myself is responsible for that during many posts but this post is purely for you guys & girls, ask anything that could help you to come up with your own company, ask anything on which you want my advice, ask anything that could help you or that could help the community on larger scale or even tell me something that could help me. I need your suggestions on how to take this blog further, what kind of posts you people are looking for, what topics should be included, Should i move away from my life oriented posts to general posts on politics, sports, business, tips & tricks etc etc. So, do give your input on this! On +ve note, i did received alot of good questions that requires a separate post per question, so look out for that.
