Anthony Minghella’s Talent - Asad Raza

The writer and director Anthony Minghella died last week at the age of fifty-four. I felt I knew him well, although I knew no biographical information about him until I began reading his obituaries. He was the type of director who imparted quite personal feelings and predilections to giant-scale movies based on prestigious novels–a rare thing to achieve. He did this so successfully that one felt one understood his consciousness, his interests, and especially his empathy, simply by watching his work: his films delineate themselves but also delineate a kind of negative-space portrait of the man himself. His life details and circumstances, once you learn them, surprise one not at all. Minghella was one of five children of Italian parents, immigrants to the Isle of Wight who ran an ice cream factory. He was a trained classical pianist, a playwright, a director of opera, and a producer and mentor to other filmmakers (with Sydney Pollack). All this makes sense. [click on the heading for more]

ایک سرد حلف برداری

2006 Letter to Musharraf

From: Dr. Khalid Luqman Chaudhry [mailto:drkluqman@gmail.com]
Sent: 27 September 2006 21:27
To: drluqman@pml1.org
Subject: We will remove Musharraf with the power of the people: Nawaz Sharif

My dear friends, AOA
General Musharaf’s book “In the line of fire,” and his various interviews and press conferences, have brought to mind the following questions. Questions General Musharaf must answer, I ‘m sure you’ll agree.
1. If Richard Armitage, the then US Assistant Secretary of State, threatened to Bomb Pakistan and send it back to stone age, why did you hide the threat from the nation and what prompted you to share it now…besides the release of your book?
2. General Musharaf has been telling the Pakistani nation that his cooperation with the USA in the fight against terrorism is not because of any threat but was his decision for the national interes of Pakistan. What is the real reason?
3. He said in the book that millions of dollars were paid to the government of Pakistan for providing the names of terrorists, apprehending them, and handing over to US government. Later he told Wolf Blitzer that funds were provided to individuals who were informers. Can you answer,
a) Where is the money? How was it given to the individuals? Was it given in Pakistan or deposited in foreign accounts.
b) How much was your share. Was it deposited in your bank account in Pakistan , in USA or your brother’s/ Son’s/nephew’s account in Boston/ New Jersey?
c) How many more Pakistani people are going to be sold by you in the name of the fighting terrorism?
4. Writing a book while being the Chief of Army Staff and President is unprecedented. What prompted you to do so knowing that it is against the nation’s interest and the confidentiality/secrecy act? Why would you tell the world, even if it was true, that Pakistan did not have an operational delivery system at the time of nuclear detonation? Don’t you think that proves you to be self serving and irresponsible? Isn’t this an act of treason?
5. In your book, you mentioned Dr. Qadeer as self-centered, selfish and the problem in nuclear proliferation. Can you tell the nation that how come Dr. Qadeer Khan stole all the secrets and plans and even the heavy Centrifuges alone by himself while being strictly guarded by SPD.
6. You lied about the facts about Kargil. You mentioned that Kargil brought Kashmir issue at limelight. You are wrong. Pakistan’s position on Kashmir is weakened now than ever. Please look the facts.
a). Indian Government’s posture about Kashmir is the same as it was prior to October 12, 1999. Actually it had softened when India ’s prime minister A B Vajpayee cameto Minaar e Pakistan , Lahore . Then it got stiffen again after you invaded Kargil.
b). You flip flopped on UN resolutions on Kashmir , time and again thus weakened the core issue.
c). United States and Europeans have done nothing to facilitate the process. Actually India has been emboldened by United States nuclear deal with India. What you got from USA was a promise of cooperation for Pakistan only. Personally you got your friendship with president Bush strengthened.
d). You have divided the Kashmiri freedom movement leaders. Hurriat Conference became two factions. Thanks to you. You have accepted India’s assertion of Kashmiri freedom fighters as the terrorists.
e). You let India complete the fence at line of control hence accepting it as a border.
f). You let India start and pursue the construction of Bagliar dam project for three years and then brought it to the attention of World Bank. It was too late then.
And that is not all; there are a lot more questions that need answers. You can begin by answering these for the Pakistani people.
Anxiously awaiting answers,
Dr. Khalid Luqman

Mediawatch World, Mar 31: Edward Said, Mistress Shakespeare, Kurd Deportation, Arab Blogging, Jean Nouvel

Edward Said was a longstanding friend and comrade. We first met in 1972, at a seminar in New York. Even in those turbulent times, one of the features that distinguished him from the rest of us was his immaculate dress sense: everything was meticulously chosen, down to the socks. It is almost impossible to visualize him any other way. At a conference in his honour in Beirut in 1997, Edward insisted on accompanying Elias Khoury and myself for a swim. As he walked out in his swimming trunks, I asked why the towel did not match. ‘When in Rome’, he replied, airily; but that evening, as he read an extract from the Arabic manuscript of his memoir Out of Place, his attire was faultless. It remained so till the end, throughout his long battle with leukaemia. Remembering Edward Said - Tariq Ali

When I heard that Germaine Greer was embarking on a biography I was skeptical of what seemed likely to be a tenuous enterprise. There are serious gaps in our knowledge of Shakespeare himself, and facts about the woman he married are even harder to come by. Though Greer makes no use in Shakespeare’s Wife of the fictions I have mentioned, she is nevertheless much concerned with what she sees as fictions masquerading as truth in what claim to be biographical writings about Shakespeare (or the Bard, as she is all too apt to call him). Ann, she considers, has had an unjustifiably bad press at the hands of (mainly male) biographers such as Anthony Burgess, Anthony Holden, and Stephen Greenblatt, and her book offers characteristically pugnacious challenges to what she sees as received opinion. Drawing on her own research in the archives of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust on the place of women in Elizabethan society, she makes use of the techniques and skills of a social historian and, to a lesser extent, a genealogist. Mistress ShakespeareBy Stanley Wells

Blinded by the apparent allure of a tall, thin woman from France, Britain’s press completely ignored the forcible deportation, on Thursday, of 60 Iraqi Kurds, who were transported back to a decidedly uncertain future on a German plane from a UK airport. Each of the 60 “failed asylum seekers,” as they are officially known, was escorted by an armed Home Office guard funded by the UK taxpayer. The guards had previously seized the men from the detention centers at Campsfield and Colnbrook in what looked uncomfortably like a “dawn raid.” UK government deports 60 Iraqi Kurds; no one notices Andy Worthington

Blogging in Egypt is taking off, although it is still relatively unknown and certainly not popular among the general public. However, among journalists and the professional, globalized class, it is an emergent phenomeneon. The Egyptian blog ring claims more than 1500 blogs, with slightly less than half of those published in English (http://www.egybloggers.com). The Egyptian Blog Review’s motto “from citizens to watchdogs” proclaims the potential for new forms of citizen media to bypass state control and self-censorship, evidence of the impact changes in global communications systems are having. These changes favor narrowcasting and transnational, sub-state media that provide a more realistic view of the world than the traditional state-run media. Rania Al Malky, a former journalist for the English-language Egypt Today, describes on her site how new media is both subversive to the state and empowering to the public: “In a country like Egypt where state control of the media has reached such epidemic proportions that self-censorship has become a worse threat than direct censorship, the empowering effect of a blog is undeniable. It was only natural that political activists would pick it up to spread their pro-reform message and coordinate demonstrations and other forms of civil action which have been slowly gaining momentum in the past two years. And they now have the tools to tell the real story of how their peaceful protests are ‘controlled’”. Blogging in the Arab World

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jean Nouvel, the French architect whose hyper-modern buildings have been acclaimed for their eclectic nature and departure from tradition, has won the 2008 Pritzker Architecture Prize, it was announced Sunday. Nouvel joins Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando and I.M. Pei in receiving the top honor in the field in recognition of his high-rises, museums and performance halls around the world. “I think they understood very well that I fight for specific architecture against generic architecture,” Nouvel said by phone from his office in Paris. “Every project is an adventure.”French architect Nouvel wins Pritzker

Tariq Ali’s concluding paragraph in Where has all the rage gone? Some, who once dreamed of a better future, have simply given up. Others espouse a bitter maxim: unless you relearn you won’t earn. The French intelligentsia, which had from the Enlightenment onwards made Paris the political workshop of the world, today leads the way with retreats on every front. Renegades occupy posts in every west European government defending exploitation, wars, state terror and neocolonial occupations; others now retired from the academy specialise in producing reactionary dross on the blogosphere, displaying the same zeal with which they once excoriated factional rivals on the far left. This, too, is nothing new. More here.

Blame game

NEW YORK, March 30: Al Qaeda is training western-looking operatives in tribal areas of Pakistan, making it easier for them to get past security at US airports, according to CIA Director Michael Hayden.

Talking on NBC’s news programme ‘Meet the Press’, Mr Hayden said the most likely point of origin from where terrorists would launch another attack against the US was the sanctuary in tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.

Mr Hayden said that they (Al Qaeda) were training “operatives who look western” and “would be able to come into this country without attracting the attention others might … If there is another terrorist attack, it will originate there.’’

How did the FE Reserves increase…

Source: Wikipedia
After nuclear tests were carried out in 1998, during the Sharif government, the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization imposed economic sanctions on Pakistan.[30] When Musharraf came to power in the coup d’etat the following year Pakistan was expelled from the Commonwealth.[31] This initially compounded the economic problems, and many experts claimed Pakistan was a failed state, as it was close to bankruptcy and investor confidence was at an all-time low. After Musharraf promised support in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, international sanctions were lifted.[32]

Musharraf then appointed Shaukat Aziz, a former Citibank executive, as finance minister.[33] World powers weighed in for debt rescheduling[34][35][36][37] to reward Pakistan due to the “war on terrorism“, which helped in saving hundreds millions of dollars, in addition to securing new loans. As a result, foreign exchange reserves increased exceeding $16 billion in 2006, but at the same time foreign debt hit an all time high topping $40 billion.[38] The government claims that the economy has grown in several sectors and that per capita income of Pakistan has more than doubled in the last seven years.[39]

n the prev. govt. kept praisin itself for increased FE reserves… another thing not mentioned on wikipedia is the privatisation of public departments… tht sellin also contributed towards the increase in reserves.

Also see below whts the current state of foreign debt

Mr Zardari referred the question about economy and new government’s plan to deal with severe economic crisis to Ishaq Dar of the PML-N, who said that the party planned to share “the opening balance with people” and a detailed brief was being prepared.

He said that foreign loans had risen from $30 billion to $42 billion in a year and domestic loans had also touched a historic high.“The economic crisis is at its worst, but the coalition has evolved a strategy to deal with it.”

Mediawatch Desi Mar 31: Cabinet Sworn, Dr. Eqbal Ahmad, Patras Bokhari, PEMRA, Ghani Khan and Moeen Faruqui

Among anticolonial intellectuals, Pakistani scholar and activist Eqbal Ahmad (1933–99), who toward the end of his life spent fifteen years teaching at Hampshire College in Massachusetts, holds a special place. He never published a classic text on the order of Frantz Fanon’s Wretched of the Earth or Edward Said’s Orientalism, nor did he achieve anything like fame. (The closest he came was a passing notoriety during the Nixon era, when he was indicted on charges of conspiring to kidnap Henry Kissinger.) Yet everyone who was someone in the vast but—in the West—obscure world of Third World radicalism knew Ahmad, and even his adversaries had a grudging respect for him. As much as Said, he was a mentor to a generation of thinkers, mostly South Asian, who have been active in protest struggles in the West as well as in the subcontinent. Amitava Kumar on Dr. Eqbal Ahmad

ISLAMABAD: The first batch of the 24-member cabinet of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani was sworn in by President Pervez Musharraf today (Monday).

On this occasion, the members sported black bands round their arms. This is the first time in the national history that cabinet members were sworn in with black bands showing protests against the man who is administering oath to them.

With the formation of the government after the oath, the countdown for the implementation of the Murree Declaration would begin. The declaration promises reinstatement of the deposed judges within 30 days after the formation of the government. 24-strong cabinet takes oath

Former Editor, journalist and PPP functionary and now the Information Minister designate Sherry Rahman will be the new czar of PEMRA. Or maybe not! Hamid Mir spoke with her and she forwarded his query to Zardari who assured Mir that Pemra has been disbanded and the announcement was culled from the PM’s speech. In half an hour the new PM made the announcement killing it, according to Mir in his column in daily Jang.

The break-in at Justice Ramday’s Islamabad house, ordered by Justice Dogar will take interesting ramifications for Gillani Administration.

An obvious strain of fatigue has started to set in across purveyors of and apologists for jihadists and the reminiscing nostalgic glorifiers of the American and Pakistani involvement in the anti-Soviet Afghan war. As the fallout of that war rips across cities louder and deadlier than ever, films such as Charlie Wilson’s War start seeming obnoxiously simplistic. Eat this, Charlie Wilson - Nadeem Paracha

More here.

Ghani Khan (1915-1996) eldest son of the legendry Pakhtoon leader, Baacha Khan was a widely acclaimed poet, painter, sculptor and a fine prose writer. Author of several books in Pashto, Urdu and English, he is known more for his writings than his art. Khan was quite familiar with, and sensitive to, the cultural heritage and social values of his people, the Pakhtoons, and this is apparent in all his works. But it was his fine lines and masterly control over his brush that lends common everyday happenings a genuine feel. A Master of lines by Sher Alam Shinwari [thanks BS]

The paintings and drawings of Moeen Faruqi, comprising acrylics on paper and canvas, and a sculpture installation on show at Rohtas 2 in Lahore, belong to this genre, which defies the scope of interpretation. On the face of things, his work seems remarkably nave and picturesque, memories of something once known and since forgotten, like childhood or paradise. It lacks any sense of dogma; yet it is a statement of fact. Faruqis is a strange, pictographic language. Strange because his images are so familiar, so bold, so insistent in their rhythmic patterns. What is one to make of a fish that remains essentially a fish, or for that matter of bottles and rugs, and cats and ducks? There is no heroic endeavour, no epic grandeur about these images, no satirical punch line; but there is poetry, and there is magic. Moeen Faruqui by Aasim Akhtar [thanks BS]
